Things to know About a Pet Parrot


Most of the people like to take a pet especially if they are alone. Even if cats and dogs are the most common and popular pets but some people takes birds as their pet. And one of the popular bird pet is parrot. But while taking a bird as your pet there are few things you need to consider such as birds are not as domesticated as dogs or cats and the issue involve with them is not the same. Here are few things to know before you take a parrot as your pet:

1.    Parrots are expensive: The cost of a parrot usually depends on their type and breed and they can vary from $100 to well over $1,000 dollars. You can buy them from any retail bird store or from an online store. If you want to buy baby parrot then online store can provide you more option. If you are short on money then try finding the parrot in an animal shelter, where you only need to pay a small adoption fee.

You will also need to buy a cage for your bird which might cost you from $300 and $1,000 dollars. After that you will need various accessories for the bird cage such as a cover, play gym, food and water dishes, a bird bath, a cuttlebone and holder etc. You will also need to provide your pet parrot with varied diet such as seeds, pellets, grains, fruits, vegetables and some time with occasional treats and this expense for diet will be needed every month.

2.    Parrots are tends to be messy: Parrots are social animal and they like squawking, chirping and talking. But in the same time they can be considered very noisy, messy, and destructive. They often chew and shred their toys and the same thing can happen to your furniture’s in case they roam free in your room. They like to eat all day long and drop food and waste to the bottom of their cage, so you will need to clean their cage at least once a week.

3.    Pet parrot live for a long time: The life span of a parrot is from 20 to 50 years. So caring for a pet parrot can be compared with caring a child and the only difference is a child grow up but the parrot will always need your care. So before you take a pet parrot, do not forget to consider about its life span.

4.    You will also need a specialized, exotic veterinarian to maintain your parrot’s health.
